One correction: I should have better researched how law was enforced prior to the Enlightenment. There were magistrates (“keepers of the peace”) from 1195. Therefore, practical law was not just enforced by the feudal baron and his underlings. However, I don’t think this affects the point I was making, that the church was a source of divine “law and order”.
